Also known as the Importation Tax or Import Duty, the Imposto de Importa??o is calculated once an importer registers an incoming shipment. The tax is automatically debited at the time of declaration. This tax is federal, therefore the same tax rate is applied throughout the country. Although the rate does not vary by location, it does vary by the HS Code (Harmonized Tariff System) that is assigned to all imported merchandise. In Brazil the HS code is sometimes referred to as NCM (Nomenclatura Comum do Mercosul).
